Security- TrueCrypt Part 03

TrueCrypt Part 03

Just for the heck of it I took a snapshot of the passwords.

Yes I know the passwords are too short... But for this application that is fine.

Now you are preparing the formatting of the file space. Move your mouse around the dialog box any which way and every which way. Make this movement as random as you can get to give the application a truely unique key.

Security- TrueCrypt Part 02

TrueCrypt Part 02

In the following caption I just basically left the defaults... For now I was not going to worry about getting fancy and I do not have a handle on all the different cryptology methods so I just went with what TrueCrypt suggested.

Pretty simple here I choose a reasonable size for the file size knowing I would use most of it for the hidden partition.

Next choose your main "Normal" password. This is the password you will use to put regular non critical but critical looking files so as to throw off any bad guys should you be forced to give up your password.

Security- TrueCrypt Part 01

TrueCrypt Part 01

Found an awesome program that will work well on a flash/USB drive. I have often been concerned to inadvertently loose my flash drive. That is why I have not put any files of a sensitive nature on it. Well no more. TrueCrypt changes all that.

This is going to be a several post thread. I have got all the screen shots made and am writing up the content.. There are some nuances in the creation of the security file that I ran into that would have made it a lot quicker set up if someone had walked me through the process, which is what I hope to do here.

Below is a snippet of some of its feature set

  • Creates a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mounts it as a real disk.

  • Encrypts an entire hard disk partition or a storage device such as USB flash drive.

  • Encryption is automatic, real-time (on-the-fly) and transparent.

  • Provides two levels of plausible deniability, in case an adversary forces you to reveal the password:

    • 1) Hidden volume.

    • 2) No TrueCrypt volume can be identified (volumes cannot be distinguished from random data).

Screen shots follow

After installing TrueCrypt (yes in you can run it without the install after file creation) launch the application and the following screen will appear.

Next select the Create Volume button and the following screen appears. For this tutorial I will be creating a standard volume and then after that is done adding into it a hidden volume. It took me a while to figure all the key strokes and getting the light to go on in my head when it did not show up. DUH its hidden. Its not supposed to... Anyway.

Click Next and get to the following screen. On this screen input where you want TrueCrypt to do its magic. In my case I chose my flash drive which was conveniently labeled F drive. I chose an innocuouss looking name test.ppt as the TrueCrypt repository file space. Hey most everybody has seen the powerpoint extension, and if anybody does try to run it and it will bark that it does not work then hopefully they think it is corrupted.
